You may think of hunting as a communal sport, and it largely is—bustling pack of hounds, lively field of riders, focused cluster of hunt staff. But sometimes, to me, the real pull of the hunt is that “lone” moment that speaks volumes—the single rider, galloping after a wayward hound, or a whip and his mount stationed on a hillside, well ahead of the action and waiting for the pack to materialize. …“Autumn Call” is one of those compelling moments. The ending trill had been blown on the horn, and the huntsman was quietly leading his pack home. It was late in the day, and late in the season—as you can tell by the rousted pumpkin field.
