I can’t profess to actually know the subjects of this painting, but I was very taken with the expression and elegance of the pair. …The two greys are probably “wheelers,” the pair closest to the coach in a four-horse hitch. And also the ones who pull the most weight. One of the things I love about this painting is that there’s an air of expectancy about it.
