It’s difficult to capture that one moment when a horse is launching himself into the air—horse and rider posed forever in stillness, when the real event lasted a split second. This is one of my few winter paintings—no leaves, no gold, only frosty browns in a late afternoon. I like it because I think it has a sense of mystery—is it the beginning of the hunt, or near the end? Are there whips nearby, or has this huntsman taken a detour to call in his errant hounds. …That’s what’s great about paintings: You’re always the one who finishes the sentence when you look at them. It’s not the artist’s truth, really. It’s yours. |
